The Report

Abdulai Yoki - goalscorer at Hayes

Boro’ managed to drag a draw from the jaws of victory when, with his side leading 1-0 going into the 5th minute of stoppage time, Boro’ defender Perry Norman was adjudged to have pushed over an only too willing opponent in the penalty area. From the resultant spot kick home substitute PETER HOLSGROVE struck home the perfect penalty to give his side the point they did not look like getting.

For Boro’ manager Edwin Stein this was a disappointing end to a match that his side had done so much to win and it was also the third game (out of 4) this season when they have spurned a lead to drop points. It was also the second game in which Norman had been found wanting when it mattered - it was his foul against Kettering and his subsequent sending off that enabled the former Conference side to take all three points just under a week previously.

Hayes had much of the play throughout but with brilliant defending throughout the Boro’ side ‘keeper David Hook was not seriously tested - except for the penalty. The best chances fell to Boro’ and they will seriously rue their inability to convert more than just the one. This is a real problem for Mr Stein.

Hayes started strongly and, following a long throw from ex-Boro’ defender Adam Everitt, Richard Goddard was forced to hook a goal bound effort off the line. Despite early home pressure it was Boro’ who should have taken the lead after 35 minutes when Dean Marney and Abdulai Yoki combined to set up Steve Dogbe, but the midfielder was not able to get enough on the ball and his effort from close range was blocked by a desperate ‘keeper Bossu.

4 minutes later Boro’ did take the lead when they earned a free kick wide out on the left. Richard Goddard knocked down Stuart Elliott’s kick for ABDULAI YOKI to hit home from close range. This was the first goal Hayes had conceded so far this season.

The home side attacked from the start of the second half and forced Boro’ to do much defending. From one of a number left wing corners taken by the energetic Kevin Warner, Mark Molesley hammered in a powerful shot which was headed of for a corner on the right by Wayne Walters via an upright.

As Hayes mounted a series of attacks Daniel Dyer was forced to head of the line from another right wing corner.

Despite all this pressure it was Boro’ who should have increased their lead on 65 minutes when, after rounding Bossu in the Hayes goal, Yoki could only fire his shot into the side netting with the goal at his mercy.

Marney forced good save from Bossu moments later and then Dyer should have netted when well placed but his lob drifted just wide.

It looked as if Boro’ would pick up their fist league victory of the season despite these misses, but then Perry Norman intervened and Peter Holsgrove (not to be confused with brothers Lee and Paul) did the rest.
